The story of our journey across Finland, Norway and Sweden on two wheels.
Our primary goal was to reach the Nordkapp which is the most northern point of Europe, starting at the bottom of Finland and ending back in Stockholm.
Our journey concluded in September 2025 and was an overwhelming success, filled with some minor difficulties and major enjoyment.
Over 16 days in August and September 2025 we travelled on two Yamaha T7s around the back roads of Scandinavia.
Our total travel distance was 6677km. We camped along the way, mostly at remote shelters (Vindskydds).
Afro-European and speaker of broken Swedish.
Enthusiastic Afrikaner and Nordic novice.
Some highlights from our trip.
Our route through Finland, Norway and Sweden.
Turku → Kajaani → Muddusjärvi
Nordkapp → Valøya → Møllsbygda
Kiruna → Västansjö → Stockholm
The Nordkapp is the most northern point in Europe and a key point we wanted to reach. To "Kapp Nord", can be loosely translated from Afrikaans ("Kap Noord") to "go north".
The Afrikaans phrase is mostly used in the context of "making forward progress regardless of difficulties".
KappNord is a reference to the journey, our heritage, our philosophy and the destination.
We camped along the way. Scandinavian countries allow people to camp and roam anywhere as long as you don't make a nuisance of yourself. This is called Allemansrätten.
We used primitive shelters all across the outdoors, called Vindskydd in Sweden, Gapahuk in Norway and Laavu in Finland. We found these using public datasets and marked them along our route. In the absence of shelters, we also had tents.
This was mostly asked by our mothers. We lived on whatever the town grocery store / fuel station had available.
One specific side-quest we had was to find the best garage station korv in the Nordics. The korv and coffee quest was a resounding success.
We tried looking for bears but couldn't find any.
We were keen to hone our skills in this regard. The only factor holding us back was the fact that we only had one rear tyre per bike that needed to last the whole trip. The latter part of our journey did see us employing this technique more often.

When I tried to book the ferry to Helsinki, the first major logistical hurdle became no longer avoidable; "Enter the vehicle registration numbers". Shit.
We knew we wanted to ride T7s, and for me that was easy, I had one sitting in the garage. But we still needed a bike for Jaco. While technically possible, renting didn't seem feasible, so we decided the best option was to buy another T7, and sell it after the trip. Not wanting to light a small pile of money on fire, it needed to be a 2nd hand bike.
After a few phone calls jumping between broken Swedish and broken English, I had a deal lined up. The only hitch was that the bike was 550km away in Skåne, and the seller was only available on a day when I had long standing plans in the afternoon. I say hitch, but to be honest I loved the idea of this small time window to get the bike and get back home.
I took the train after work, slept a few hours in Lund, and then drove about an hour with another friend, Scott, to meet the seller. We got there just after 8am, and I was on my way by 08:45 thanks to Swedish efficiency. I now had just over 6 hours to make it back to Stockholm.
The ride was cold but otherwise uneventful, and after a couple coffee and korv breaks, Jaco's bike was parked next to mine. Until this point, he had no idea about any details of the bike, except that it was a T7 and within budget.
I made him wait until the next morning before revealing the details. An almost identical bike to mine, just missing a bunch of scratches. That can soon be fixed.
